From a teacher's point of view, I like the no-nonsense writing
tasks: a written account of some factual data, or of a process
diagram, followed by a classic 5 paragraph discursive essay.
Preparing for these leads the students to apply a logic and
efficiency to their communication which I believe will serve them
well for life. If it wasn't for the IELTS exam, I think I'd have a
hard time getting the students to write such essays for fun....
