If you’re planning to move to the UK, you may have to take IELTS for UKVI, a UK-government approved test.

It’s the same test as IELTS but is taken under slightly different conditions.

IELTS for a Tier 4 Student Visa

If you are applying for a Tier 4 Student Visa to study at a bachelor or postgraduate degree level at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor, you must meet the English language level set by the institution.

All British universities and colleges accept IELTS results. It means that you can apply to the UK universities listed here with an IELTS result and may not have to take IELTS for UKVI. Please note that some institutions may have additional requirements, so best to check with your institute.

Difference between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI (without a pre-sessional)

Like IELTS, IELTS for UKVI offers a choice between Academic and General test to serve both academic and non-academic purposes. IELTS for UKVI is the same test as IELTS, with no difference in the test format, questions, level of difficulty, scoring, speaking test and so on.

IELTS for UKVI is designed to meet certain administrative requirements that are specific to UK Visas and Immigration. Test Report Forms will be slightly different, to show that test takers have taken the test at an IELTS UK visa session.

Student can use the below as a guide:

  • Direct entry to an Undergraduate or Postgraduate course at HEI/Tier 4 Sponsor in the UK -----> Study IELTS
  • Non-higher education institution or Pre-sessional or foundation course (below degree level) in the UK -----> IELTS for UKVI
