IELTS on computer and on paper – both a path to Canada

If you’re interested in moving to or staying in Canada often an English language test is a vital piece of the immigration puzzle.

For years more test takers have chosen IELTS than any other English language test for Canadian visa purposes. Why? Well IELTS is the only globally available English language test accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). IELTS is trusted by the authorities and can be a great way to help you progress your immigration goals.

Does it matter whether I take IELTS on computer or paper for Canadian immigration?

No it doesn’t. Both computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS are accepted by Canadian immigration authorities. That’s because IELTS on computer is exactly the same test as paper-based IELTS, but instead of writing your answers on paper, you will type them on a computer.
As computer-delivered IELTS is held in a test centre, it has the high level security requirements that government authorities require.  IELTS was the first test to be recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

What about ‘at home’ or online English language tests?

Tests taken at home or not in a secure test centre environment are not accepted by government immigration authorities in Canada. This includes IELTS Indicator. As IELTS Indicator is an Academic test and is taken outside of a test centre it is not accepted for immigration purposes.
Computer-delivered or paper-based IELTS tests in a test centre are the only English language tests accepted by all four immigration authorities of Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada.

So you know you’re in good hands with IELTS

IELTS is one of the world’s most popular high-stakes English language tests, with over 3.5 million tests taken annually. It is the English test of choice for educational organisations, professional associations, employers and immigration authorities in Canada.

Find your nearest IELTS test location and take IELTS in the country of your choice.

Great news, computer-delivered IELTS testing in centres are gradually opening again after test centres suspensions due to COVID-19. More and more centres are opening weekly.
