IELTS practice test

The IELTS test assesses your abilities in all four skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – in under three hours.
IELTS USA is pleased to offer a free IELTS practice test to test takers who register for IELTS in the USA!

The practice test includes an overview of the test format with a variety of sample test questions and answers, to assist you in preparing for the real IELTS test. In addition, you will have the opportunity to time yourself as you take each section of the practice test, so you can prepare yourself for the real test day experience.

Test format – Listening (30 minutes)

Begin your Practice Listening Test

Download the following IELTS Practice Listening test and Blank Answer Sheet, then begin your sample practice test. The audio files for each section of the Practice Listening test are provided in the box below. You will only have 30 minutes to complete this section of the test, so we recommend you time yourself as you complete your practice test.

Once you have completed the sample practice test, download the following IELTS Practice Listening Test Answer Key and check your answers. Each correct answer receives 1 mark and scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.

Download the following IELTS Practice Academic Writing test then begin your sample practice test. You will only have 60 minutes to complete this section of the test, so we recommend you time yourself as you complete your practice test. You should spend approximately 20 minutes on Writing Task 1 and approximately 40 minutes on Writing Task 2.

Once you have completed the sample practice test, review the sample “model” response and feedback based on the IELTS assessment criteria used to mark the test.

Download the following IELTS Practice General Training Writing test then begin your sample practice test. You will only have 60 minutes to complete this section of the test, so we recommend you time yourself as you complete your practice test. Test format – Speaking (1114 minutes)

Begin your Practice Speaking Test

Download the following IELTS Practice Speaking test and think of “model” responses to the questions in parts 1-3 of the test. We suggest you practice the speaking test with a study partner and complete all 3 parts of the test without a break, to make your practice as realistic as possible. You will have approximately 11-14 minutes to complete this section of the test, so we recommend you time yourself as you complete your practice test.
